Cinnamon Roll Disaster

So Devin really was hoping I would make cinnamon rolls for conference this year. Family tradition style you know? I am not a baker, but really how hard could it be? I had a recipe and I followed the directions exactly. I will tell you how hard it can be. I tried three different recipes. The first recipe did not rise despite the fast acting yeast, and on the second and third I never even made it to the dough stage because the yeast and warm water DID NOT BUBBLE!! Is that even possible? Needless to say, I was frustrated beyond belief and when Devin started trying to make them himself, I had fully given up. Someone please give me cinnamon roll advice and an amazing no fail recipe. PLEASE!! I really want to be able to make them. For my posterity you know? Devin said his moms cinnamon rolls were the only thing that got him excited about the Saturday sessions of conference when he was young. Will my fate be ruined because I cannot bake? I had this dream that cinnamon rolls would be easy and that my family would cheer when they were finished. Instead I was embarressed in front of all of my friends. Oh the pain. Can anyone coach me? What can be done for this helpless baker who can't even mix water and yeast?

Oh the drama! I think my mom was smart to scratch the cinnimon roll tradition and go with Breakfast Burritos for Conference Sunday. We still do it and they're soooo much easier. And maybe even healthier.

go to allrecipes.com and find a recipe that has LOTS of rankings. people review the recipes and a lot of times they are pretty savvy cooks/bakers and know what they are talking about. i've found some of my BEST no-fail recipes on there.

i've never attempted cinnamon rolls....too scared.

Part of me wants to say what one of the mission nurses here says to the missionaries who whine, "Come on elder, put on your big girl pants!" But also remember when I was afraid to bake bread or the likes. Please don't give up. I think your yeast was bad. I know you and you are one of the best cooks of your generation...so try it again. My first cinnamon roll were just rolls (I know you do those really well) with cinnamon and sugar and butter on them.
Most of all I'm glad there is a good memory for Devin. That was the whole idea in the first place. We wanted the kids to love conference weekend...to have smells bring back memories, and to remember loving family time. I hope Devin now loved the "palabras dulces de los profetas" along with the memory of cinnamon roll tastes and smells. YOu go girl! Keep trying! Love Mom C

I am no cooking pro, but I agree with several other people: I think your yeast was bad. Have you ever tried using SAF brand yeast? It is the best I've used and you can freeze it so it lasts a lot longer. Good luck! Miss you!
